Mavelikara is a Taluk in southern part of Alappuzha district of Kerala, and is located on the banks of the Achankovil River. 'Kuthiyottam' and 'Kettukazcha' are the main rituals of the festival. It is normally celebrated in the month of February or March. 'Kuthiyottam' is the procession of young boys accompanied with traditional music. The boys are dancing in a devotional style.

Arthunkal Perunnal - This is the grand annual festival of amusement and rejoice celebrated in the churches of Alleppey in the month of January. This grand Christian festival is celebrated at the Arthunkal Church which is the major pilgrim center of the Christians. This festival is locally known as Makaram Perunnal. Thousands of pilgrims rush to the coastal village to participate in the festival. 

Chirappu Mahotsavam - In the month of December the important occasion at Mulakkal temple is the 'Chirappu Mahotsavam’. The place becomes live with many options of entertainment like circus, exhibitions, moving markets and fairs. The display of nine tuskers called Shiveli accompanied by Chenda and the Panchavadam music is a feast for the visitors travelling Alleppey during this time.

Champakulam Moolam Boat Race of Kerala


Life in Kerala is made colorful with many festivals and especially boat races held at these backwater locations. Champakulam Boat race is held on the river Pampa, on Moolam day of the Malayalam calendar. This was the day when idol of Lord Krishna was established in Ambalappuzha temple. It is the first race of harvest season starting from June and ending in October. Venue for the race is Champakulam which is just twenty six km from Alappuzha. This year it was held at Alappuzha, on 30th of June. It is one of the most popular boat races of Kerala.
